Many present-day countries including England, Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey and Egypt were part of this great empire. The language of the Roman Empire was Latin and Greek. The Western Roman Empire lasted for 500 years, while the Eastern, or Byzantine, empire, which included Greece and Turkey, lasted for a thousand years. The capital of the Eastern Empire was Constantinople.
The Western Roman Empire was destroyed by the Germans on September 4, 476, while the Byzantine Empire ended with the conquest of Constantinople by the Ottomans on May 29, 1453. At its height, the Roman Empire covered 5,900,000 square kilometers (2,300,000 sq mi). The culture, law, technology, arts, language, religions, government, military and architecture of Western civilization still have a glimpse of the Roman Empire.
